One dead, 33 injured in Kentucky school bus crash

One student was killed and 33 were injured when a school bus crashed in Oak Grove, Kentucky, on Thursday

OAK GROVE, Kentucky (CNN) -- One elementary school student was killed and 31 others and two adults were injured when their school bus overturned on the way to school Thursday morning, state police said.

The bus was carrying 47 students, their driver and a monitor when the accident occurred about 7:10 a.m. about a mile from the school, said State Trooper Chuck Robertson.

The bus was traveling north to South Christian Elementary when the driver apparently lost control and the bus rolled across the two southbound lanes, landing on the opposite side of the four-lane highway.

"One student was ejected, and that student was pronounced dead at the scene by the Christian County coroner," Robertson said.

Nineteen students were taken immediately to area hospitals. Another 12 were taken to triage set up at the school and later were transported to the hospital.

The driver and monitor also were injured, Robertson said.

No other vehicles were involved, and the weather was clear at the time, Robertson said. An investigation was ongoing.
