| Ring of fire burns in central Florida
HAINES CITY, Florida (CNN) -- Dozens of fire crews Saturday worked to douse a brush fire that has burned at least two homes in Haines City, about 25 miles southeast of Orlando, Florida. The ring of fire was burning at the edge of a dried lake bed, said Polk County Fire Chief Bill Gunter. Twenty city and county units were on the scene, along with four units from the Florida Division of Forestry. No injuries were reported. "It's jumped the road several times on us," Gunter said. The fire was burning out of control near Interstate 4, the major thoroughfare between Tampa and Orlando.
"It's not posing any danger to those [roads] at this time," Gunter said. Glowing against a dark winter sky, the fire was threatening several smaller homes and trailers, Gunter said. Some residents have evacuated. Randy Powers, a reporter with Orlando television station WTVT, said he saw two homes in flames. Gunter did not know what caused the fire. Conditions have been dry in Florida, which, like much of the southeast, has suffered through three consecutive years of drought.
