| Do-gooder lets students down; mom takes up cause
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- When Kenneth Webb was in sixth grade, a philanthropist said he would pay for the college education of every student in Webb's class who graduated from a Washington public high school. It was a grand gesture, and an effective one. The promise inspired Webb and a number of his classmates to do well in school and dream of a higher education. Alas, it was a promise that would not be kept -- at least, not by the man who made it. In the end, the philanthropist came up only with excuses -- leaving Webb's own mother to find a way to provide the scholarships. Copyright 2000 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
