BEIJING (Reuters) -- A tornado killed 11 people, injured 500 and destroyed more than 4,000 houses in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.
It said the tornado hit the cities of Yangzhou and Taizhou on Thursday afternoon, uprooting large trees and disrupting power supplies and telecommunications.
The tornado ripped across fields of rice and cotton, causing more than four million yuan ($480,000) in damage, Xinhua said.
