Swiss-owned plane crashes off Libya coast with 43 aboard
January 13, 2000 BERN, Switzerland -- A plane belonging to a Zurich-based air charter company crashed into the sea off the coast of Libya on Thursday with 43 people aboard, Swiss officials say. The Swiss News Agency told CNN the passengers were apparently workers on their way to jobs at an oil platform. None of the passengers were Swiss nationals, officials with the Swiss Federal Air Accident Investigation Bureau said. The plane was owned by the Avisto air charter company, reports said. A company spokesman had no details on the flight and could not say who had leased the twin-engine plane. Officials said the plane went down about 2:30 p.m. (1230 GMT). The accident came just three days after a Swiss Crossair plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Zurich. Ten people died in that crash. Reuters contributed to this report.
