| Thirteen killed in Kenya train crashNAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) -- A commuter train derailed in western Kenya, killing 13 people and injuring 36 others, police said on Wednesday. The train, which was traveling between Butere in western Kenya and Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria, jumped the rails in heavy rain on Tuesday night about 250 miles northwest of Nairobi. Police said 13 people were been killed, most of them crushed to death as four of the train's cars rolled over. More than 400 people were aboard, and the dead, all Kenyans, included 10 adults and three children. Rescuers struggled for several hours to free passengers trapped in overturned cars. Those efforts were hampered by poor weather. A police officer at the scene said the train left the tracks just after negotiating a bend on a steep slope. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
