| Ghana presidential election runoff set for December 28ACCRA, Ghana (Reuters) -- Opposition candidate John Kufuor and John Atta Mills of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will meet on December 28 in a runoff in Ghana's presidential election, the Electoral Commission said Tuesday. In a statement published in the official gazette, Commission Chairman Kwadwo Afari-Gyan also gave the final results of the December 7 election, in which no candidate won an outright majority.
Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) polled 48.35 percent of the vote against 44.85 percent for Mills. The runoff election will herald the end of 19 years in power in the West African country for President Jerry Rawlings, who is stepping down on January 7 because of a constitutional two-term limit. Among the five other candidates, Edward Mahama of the People's National Convention (PNC) obtained 2.5 percent and George Hagan of the Convention People's Party (CPP) 1.8 percent. Goosie Tanoh, of the National Reform Party (NRP), and Charles Wereko-Brobby, running for the United Ghana Movement (UGM) got 1.1 percent and 0.3 percent respectively. All have called on their supporters to rally behind Kufuor in the second round. The remaining candidate, Dan Lartey of the Great Consolidates Popular Party (GCPP) won 1 percent.
