Volcano erupts near Guatemala City
January 16, 2000 From Mexico City Bureau Chief Harris Whitbeck GUATEMALA CITY (CNN) -- An erupting volcano, spewing fire, lava and ash, has prompted Guatemala to declare its highest state of alert. The volcano, known as Pacaya, erupted Sunday near the Aurora airport in the town of San Vicente, filling the air with huge black clouds of ash and smoke, visible all the way to Guatemala City, 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) to the south. No casualties have been reported from Pacaya, but nearby coffee plantations were being evacuated. Pacaya last erupted in 1998, and caused no damage or injuries.
