Firestone recalls tires in Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia (CNN) -- Firestone officials announced Thursday they would begin recalling tires in Colombia that are mislabeled.

Soraya Muriel, a Firestone official in Colombia, said the recall would begin September 15 for two models of Firestone tires that have labels that say they are five-ply tires. The tires only have four plies or layers of tread.

She said the recall is not related to problems with Firestone tires in the United States where some Wilderness, AT and ATX II tires are being recalled because of shredding problems.

The two models being recalled are Wilderness P-235-75 15-inch tires with both black and white lettering, as well as Wilderness P-255-70 16-inch tires with both black and white lettering.

Muriel said the mislabeling does not compromise the safety of the tires.

The action marks the first recall of the tires by Firestone in Colombia. Firestone has recalled similar tire models in Venezuela.

Ford Motor Co. said it would also begin recalling Explorers and F-150 trucks in Colombia in the near future to replace the Firestone tires on those vehicles. A Ford spokesman said that the recall will begin as soon as its representative in Colombia coordinates the recall with Ford dealers.

All of the tires being recalled were made in Firestone's factory in Venezuela.
