CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo (CNN) -- The U.S. Army is investigating allegations that a number of U.S. soldiers mistreated Kosovar men and women during protests earlier this month. The suspects have been reassigned pending the outcome of the inquiry.

In a statement, officials said they ordered an investigation into complaints of improper conduct on the part of Task Force Falcon soldiers during demonstrations in Vitina, Kosovo, on January 9 and 10.

"Preliminary findings indicate several soldiers may have been involved in misconduct, including improper use of physical force and threats against Kosovar males and inappropriate physical contact with Kosovar females," the statement said.

"These incidents allegedly occurred during crowd and traffic control duties and while questioning suspects and witnesses. The soldiers who may have been involved have been relocated and assigned to other duties pending the outcome of the investigations."

No charges have been filed, but the statement said the Army's investigation is ongoing. Also looking at the case is the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.

"The U.S. Army takes these matters very seriously and will continue the investigations until all facts are known," the statement said.

"Upon completion of the investigations, appropriate corrective measures and disciplinary actions will be taken, to include actions under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, if warranted. Additional information will be provided upon completion of the investigations, or if charges are filed against any U.S. soldiers."

Last week, the Army announced it had arrested Staff Sgt. Frank Ronghi, accusing him of murder and indecent acts with a child, after the discovery of the body of an 11-year-old Kosovo girl.

Producer Kevin Enochs contributed to this report.
