BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (CNN) -- Serbian opposition leader Vuk Draskovic was shot and slightly wounded late Thursday while sitting in his apartment in Budva, Montenegro, one of his top party officials told CNN.

The official said Draskovic was being treated at a local hospital. The injury, he said, was not life-threatening.

Belgrade Bureau Chief Alessi Vinci reports that more than one man entered the apartment and started shooting. Draskovic tried to seek refuge behind a table.

  MESSAGE BOARD

A spokesman for Draskovic confirmed that the politician had been shot and described the shooting as an assassination attempt.

It was reported that Draskovic was in his apartment alone at the time of the shooting. His wife later joined her husband at the hospital.

There is no indication of who was responsible for the attack and sources close to the opposition leader are not accusing anyone in connection with the attack.

Draskovic has in the past accused Yugoslav authorities of trying to kill him.

Draskovic was reported to have been wounded lightly in the head and one ear. He has been discharged from hospital.

An advisor to Draskovic said the attack appeared to have been carried out with an automatic weapon. Draskovic's apartment was riddled with bullets.

Belgrade Bureau Chief Alessio Vinci contributed to this report.
