| German President Rau recovering after surgeryBERLIN (Reuters) -- German President Johannes Rau is recovering well after surgery to replace part of his stomach artery and should leave hospital within 10 days, doctors said on Monday. Professor Christoph Broelsch, head of a six-member team who performed Sunday's operation, said the surgery was a success. The 69-year-old president remained in intensive care Monday. Rau would not have to restrict his activities on health grounds and should make a complete recovery after leaving hospital, Broelsch said. The German presidency is a largely ceremonial post. Most political power rests with the chancellor. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
