Suspected ETA car blown up in Spain

MADRID, Aug 15 (Reuters) -- Spanish civil guards on Tuesday carried out a controlled explosion of a car believed to have been intended for use in an attack by the Basque separatist group ETA, state radio reported.

The vehicle was found on Monday following an intensified campaign of violence by ETA. It was parked on a highway near the town of Benabarre in northern Huesca province and carried false number plates, a local official said.

Security officials have been on alert since two assassinations blamed on ETA last week. That was after four suspected members of the group died when a bomb blew up in their car on August 7.

The group has claimed responsibility for seven other killings since it ended a ceasefire last December. It has been blamed for about 800 deaths since it began its violent campaign for an independent northern Basque state over 30 years ago.
