Danish opinion polls show swing behind euro

The poll was one of the largest conducted over the euro

COPENHAGEN -- The prospect of Danes voting in favour of their country joining the European single currency has grown with opinion polls showing sharply increased support for the euro.

A poll by PLS Ramboell for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation published on Sunday showed 45 per cent of Danes in favour of joining the currency, with 36 percent against -- though with a massive 19 percent still undecided.

The survey of 1,700 people was one of the largest conducted in the campaign leading to a referendum on the issue on September 28.

The nine percent lead for a "yes" vote contrasted with a Gallup poll a week ago showing the two sides running neck and neck -- with 44 percent in favour, 43 percent against and 13 percent undecided.

Ten percent swing

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation web site, DR online, also reported that there was a 10 percent swing before and after a TV debate on the euro in which the Prime Minister and opposition leader took part.

Before the "National Euro Debate" which took part in Odense, 362 people were asked their views on the single currency. On Saturday, 45 percent were in favour with 36 percent opposed and 19 percent undecided.

After participants had been able to confront experts as well as members of the European and Danish parliaments, support increased to 51 percent, with 40 percent opposed and only nine percent declaring themselves undecided.

Reuters contributed to this report.
