Second trawler sinks off Ireland

DUBLIN, Ireland (CNN) -- A full-scale rescue effort is resuming on Wednesday for seven crewmen missing from a trawler that capsized in rough seas off the west coast of Ireland.

Five other men are known to have died. One was rescued and is recovering in hospital.

The fishing vessel Arosa -- which has a Spanish owner, but is registered in Milford Haven in Wales -- sank after sending out a Mayday call at about 0400 GMT on Tuesday.

The Irish Coastguard said it hit rocks known as Inisguddle Island, off the coast of County Mayo. A spokesman said the search was suspended on Tuesday evening as darkness fell in appalling conditions.

Ten of the Arosa's crew are Spanish, the other three are African -- two from Sao Tome and one from Ghana.

"This morning we had one helicopter from the Irish Air Corps, two Coastguard helicopters a lifeboat and a number of local fishing vessels involved in the rescue effort," a spokesman for the Irish Coastguard told CNN.com.

"This afternoon a naval vessel has joined the search."

Eight presumed dead

The tragedy is the second in three days off the Irish coast. The French-registered An Orient went down within seconds on Sunday after being swamped by a huge wave some 92 km (57 miles) off Kerry Head.

The skipper and two crewmen were rescued and treated for hypothermia, after spending several hours in the water, but eight fishermen are missing, presumed dead.

The search for the crewmen -- from France, Portugal and Ireland -- was finally called off on Tuesday.

The spokesman for the Irish Coastguard said: "There was a last air search this morning. We've spent two-and-a-half days searching an area of 600 square miles.

"The skipper said the crewmen didn't have time to get lifejackets on and with no survival equipment the chances of them still being alive are basically nil."
