| A wild goose chaseMIRANO, Italy -- In the streets of Pamplona they run with the bulls. In Sienna, they race horses. In Mirano they race geese.
The village in northern Italy is home to an annual goose race. The brainchild of a local bartender, it attracts more than 100 entrants. Under the rules of the race, it is forbidden to kick your goose's behind or that of a rival bird. Any damage to rivals, including from firearms, will lead to disqualification. The owners guide their geese with sticks along the 419-meter (460-yard) course lined with spectators, many dressed as 19th-century farmers. The owner of Spartacus, the winning goose, explained the champion's approach on the eve of the race. "He just had a light training session yesterday and a quiet evening with no sex, disco or hard drinking," said Claudio Marzaro. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
