| Europe braces for more snowLONDON, England (CNN) -- Heavy snowfall has been causing chaos across Europe, with forecasters warning more icy weather is on the way. According to police in Berlin, 400 car accidents in the capital were caused by heavy snowfall on Christmas Day. In the south of Germany, falling rain froze to ice as it hit the ground, resulting in treacherous black ice. Further snow was forecast for Germany on Wednesday. There have also been heavy snow falls in northern Italy, which police say have caused numerous accidents.
The outlook for hundreds of holiday travellers who spent Christmas stranded at Milan's Malpensa airport improved as conditions there slowly returned to normal. Snow, ice and fog had snarled up air traffic on Sunday and Monday, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Many people were trapped aboard airplanes for hours, then ended up spending the night in the terminal. CNN Weather Anchor Guillermo Arduino said: "Conditions across Europe are very messy -- from the continuous rain in the Iberian peninsula to the persistent snow in Germany, Poland, and Russia. "We are having more snow in many parts of Germany -- particularly Schleswig-Holstein, Sauerland, Hamburg and Bremen areas, Berlin and its vicinity. "Paris has a more than slim chance of snow in the forecast for Wednesday and the Alps will have very reasonable snowfall. "England is likely to see a break in the pattern for a while. Now sandwiched by a couple of fronts, England seems to have partly clear skies in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday but quite chilly. Scotland will see ice and snow and Iceland a bit more of icy weather. "The rain will prevail in Iberia but winds will subside a little."
