Bomb blast in Corsica

Bomb blast in Corsica

AJACCIO, France (Reuters) -- A bomb blast has destroyed offices and shattered windows at a government building in the Corsican town of Corte.

No one was injured in the explosion, which occurred in the early morning outside the Environment Office of Corsica.

Police said the explosion caused around 500,000 French francs ($70,000) worth of damage.

It was the fourth time the building on the French Mediterranean island has been attacked.

Corsican nationalists claimed responsibility for the previous three as part of their separatist campaign.

French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has offered Corsica an unprecedented degree of autonomy if separatists end the bombings that have plagued the island for 20 years.

It was proposed that the Corsican assembly get the power to adapt laws passed in Paris within four years.

But the separatist Fronte Patriotu said on August 4 that it wanted a swift, concrete plan of action and would carry out attacks "if necessary."

Reuters contributed to this report.
