BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- At least two people died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on the Russian Embassy in Beirut on Monday afternoon as Lebanese security forces exchanged gunfire with the attackers.

A guard at the embassy, whose nationality was not immediately known, and a Lebanese police officer outside the embassy were dead Monday.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack. But Lebanese Muslim militants opposed to Russia's military campaign against fellow Muslims in Chechnya have staged protests against Moscow and have raised money to support the Islamic fighters in the Northern Caucasus.
