U.N. envoy tours Lebanese-Israeli border

ABBAD HILL, Lebanese-Israeli border(Reuters) -- U.N. envoy Terje Roed-Larsen on Wednesday inspected points along the Israeli-Lebanese border that Beirut said Israel had encroached upon.

A Reuters correspondent saw Larsen inspect with Lebanese army cartographers and the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon Abbad hill and the al-Manara, where Lebanon said Israel was building part of a road inside Lebanese territory, forcing a halt to the planned deployment of U.N. troops on Wednesday.

  MESSAGE BOARD

Larsen walked into Israel after inspecting the area. A U.N. official said Larsen had expressed his anger to senior Israeli commanders at Nahariya over Israeli violations of the line which the United Nations designated to confirm Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon in May.

"They informed Mr Larsen that all violations would be rectified tonight," a U.N. official said.

"(The Israeli generals) said they would follow a mechanism that would avoid further violations by consulting with UNIFIL each move that might affect the border line," he said.

The official said Larsen had returned to Lebanon where he would meet President Emile Lahoud on Thursday morning. An announcement on the timing of the deployment of UNIFIL and the Lebanese army in the south would be made then, the official said.

On Monday, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan sent a letter to the Security Council reporting full compliance by Israel with the line of withdrawal set by the United Nations along the Lebanon-Israel border.
