Corner post is flash point for Israelis, Palestinians

gaza strip

GAZA (CNN) -- Gaza simmers all summer long, but the temperature is often particularly high at the Nitzareem Junction, where an Israeli military post is a popular target for Palestinian stones.

Confrontation between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian stone throwers is almost a daily ritual at the intersection.

To the Israelis, the post is crucial to the safety of Jewish settlers' convoys. The Palestinians see it as a provocation and say the Israeli army had no right to put a military post there.

"It's illegal," said Palestinian Authority Brig. Gen. Osama Al-Ali. "I can't guard an illegal position of the Israeli army."

So it takes little to spark a confrontation here, where tension has found a home.
