Egypt to build third terminal at Cairo Airport

Egypt to build third terminal at Cairo Airport

CAIRO, Egypt (Reuters) -- Egypt plans to build a third terminal at Cairo Airport starting early next year and the government is examining alternative schemes to finance the project, its transport minister said on Sunday.

"The new terminal is planned to absorb growing air traffic to Egypt," Ibrahim Demiri said during an inspection of renovation work at the airport.

The ministry is to submit a report to Prime Minister Atef Obeid on financing possibilities, Demiri added.

The minister outlined four possible methods of financing: joint funding by the ministry and private investors; self-finance by tapping into Cairo Airport Authority's surplus revenues; central government funding; low-interest loans from foreign financial institutions.

Once a method of financing is decided and secured, construction will be completed within a six month limit, Demiri added.
