1. Who is Kim Dae-jung? What year did he become president of South Korea? What award did Kim Dae-jung receive? What will he receive for winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Why was he chosen from 150 nominees to receive the Nobel Peace Prize? What is he sometimes called? Who is Nelson Mandela? Why do you think he is called the "Nelson Mandela of Asia"? Do you think there are similar traits between him and Mandela?
2. What happened in Pyongyang in June? Why do you think this was significant?
Some people say that the North Koreans could feel offended because the award only went to the South Korean leader. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain your answer.
3. Have students pair with another student. Direct the pairs to create a list of potential nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. Under each name, they must write two to three sentences explaining why that person should get the award. If time allows, let them do research to support their reasons. Have students present their lists and reasons to the class.
