Roger Clinton arrested for drunken driving

HERMOSA BEACH, California (CNN) -- Former President Clinton's younger brother Roger Clinton, who was recently pardoned, was arrested Saturday for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police officials said.

An officer while on routine patrol noticed a Ford Expedition "driving erratically," Paul Wolcott of the Hermosa Beach Police Department said. The officer reported the vehicle made several violations including straddling the center divide, failing to signal and failing to stop at the limit line.

The officer pulled Roger Clinton over in downtown Hermosa Beach and began the "standard DUI investigation" when the officer smelled alcohol on Clinton's breath, police said.

Clinton was taken to Hermosa Beach city jail where he took a breath alcohol analysis that indicated his blood alcohol level "met the threshold for the presumption that he was driving under the influence," Wolcott said.

Clinton was released on his on recognizance on Saturday morning and was not required to post bail, Wolcott said. Because Clinton lives in the area, he said, "we give the person the benefit of the doubt that they're going to be there" in court.

Clinton is scheduled to appear before a judge April 2. Wolcott said Clinton could face a maximum of a year in jail if convicted of the charge.

Clinton was one of 140 people pardoned by his brother in the last days of the Clinton presidency. The younger Clinton had been convicted of a cocaine drug charge in Arkansas in the mid-1980s, while his brother was the state's governor.
