Bush names U.N. ambassador nominee

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush announced Tuesday his intention to nominate John D. Negroponte to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Currently, Negroponte is the executive vice president for global markets of McGraw-Hill Companies. His background includes such foreign service posts as ambassador to Honduras, to Mexico, and to the Philippines. He held the post of deputy assistant secretary of state with the rank of ambassador for oceans and fisheries affairs, and was appointed deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific affairs in 1980.

From 1985 to 1987, he was assistant secretary of state for oceans and international environment and scientific affairs. Former President Ronald Reagan named him deputy assistant to the president for national security affairs, a post he held until 1989.

Negroponte graduated from Yale University and has five children.
