Vice president encouraged by results of health exam

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Aides say Vice President Dick Cheney had a follow-up exam last week for his March cardiac catheterization and was encouraged by the results.

The tests included an EKG and a full blood workup.

A Cheney aide said the vice president has lost 20 pounds since last summer, and is keeping to his exercise and diet regimen. Doctors said at the time of the procedure that there was about a 40 percent chance of more scar tissue forming and at least partially blocking the artery in which a stent was placed late last year.

But the aides say Cheney has not experienced any discomfort or "twinges" like those that forced him into a brief hospitalization earlier this month.

According to an aide, the exam found a cholesterol level of 172 and blood pressure of 118/60.

Cheney, who has a 22-year history of heart problems, also suffered a mild heart attack in November. One of Cheney's heart arteries was 90 percent blocked, prompting doctors to implant a wire scaffolding-like device called a stent to push away the blockage and prop open the artery walls. He remained in the hospital for a short time, was released, and began the transition efforts for the incoming Bush administration.
