Ralph Reed elected to head Georgia's Republican Party

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed was elected to be the chairman of Georgia's Republican Party at its convention Saturday.

Georgia GOP spokeswoman Joan Ransom said Reed took 1,462 votes, beating contenders David Shafer, who took 868 votes, and Maria Strollo, who received 88 votes.

In a statement announcing his candidacy for the post, Reed said the Clinton era is over.

"It is time for a renaissance of Republican ideas and conservative ideals in our state that will make history and take our citizens to a higher and better place," the statement said.
