Major hopefuls all but set for NYC mayoral race
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer officially declared his candidacy for mayor of New York City. He is the last of the six major candidates expected to enter the race. Ferrer kicked off his campaign Wednesday in a front of a crowd of almost 200 supporters in the Bronx neighborhood in which he grew up. "I want to make New York work for all New Yorkers, regardless of where they live, how much they earn, the color of their skin or the language they speak, " he said. He touched upon education, health care, affordable housing, and much more in his 30-minute speech. Also on hand to offer support and to lead the event was Carl McCall who is running for governor of New York. Ferrer will face three other candidates in the Democratic primary on September 11: Public Advocate Mark Green, City Comptroller Alan Hevesi and City Council Speaker Peter Vallone. Michael Bloomberg and Herman Badillo are Republican candidates for mayor. |
