Hayami wants to quit, says Yomiuri

TOKYO, Japan -- Bank of Japan governor Masaru Hayami may resign some time in May if newly elected prime minister Junichiro Koizumi accepts his resignation, the Yomiuri national newpaper said on Friday.

A BOJ official declined to comment on the report.

The Yomiuri said in its wire service that Hayami planned to resign after attending this weekend's meeting of Group of Seven industrial nations due to his age and for health reasons.

The paper added that the 76-year-old central bank governor Hayami had told former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori in March that he wanted to resign from his post.

Reuters contributed to this report.
