How are you Healing?
In the wake of the World Trade Center attack, many have grieved for America, for lost friends and relatives, and perhaps even for a shaken faith in our future and in humanity. As time goes on, life slowly returns to normal, and people seek comfort and healing in many ways, whether through watching football, talking to neighbors or through prayer. We asked our readers to send us their methods of healing. The response was overwhelming with e-mails reflecting the wide diversity of coping methods exercised by our readers. We thank you for your many interesting contributions, some of which appear below: "I talk to my grandchildren a lot. I went to the zoo with them yesterday thinking how thankful I am that I still have the freedom to still do things with them. I pray a lot." -- Betty Sauls, Greenville, SC
"Mainly by focusing on the good people have shown - more kindness, love and support are out there than hatred and cruelty. Also by helping others." -- Shari, Boynton Beach, FL "Getting re-involved with the volunteer fire company I was an active member with... but have been on a leave for the past 3 years." -- Paul, Feasterville, PA "Getting a new puppy." -- Tom Hively, Orange Park, Florida "Our family is healing by supporting our economy. We will not change travel plans and continue to fly for both business and pleasure." -- Cres Miranda, Las Vegas, NV "I am a high school English teacher and my classes have done research on terrorism, so we can have worthy discussions. We also wrote letters to firemen, police and rescue workers expressing appreciation. My students are healing; hence, I am healing too." -- Regina Rockburn, Tupper Lake, NY "I listen to the Beach Boys." --Tom, Stockholm, Sweeden "I'm from Egypt, so the only way to help that I have is to pray day and night, and if you want me to do any thing I can do from here just tell me and I will do my all best to help. God bless America, and other countries that will help" -- Micheal Samir Hanna, Cairo, Egypt "I am dealing with this attack by trying hard to stay interested in my hobbies and work. My family is closer than ever." -- Robert, Seattle, WA "I'm getting married." -- Tracee, Washington, D.C. "I'm a copy editor for a newspaper. For journalists, I'm not sure there's going to be a 'normal.' We're having to live it every day we're at work, which right now is every day, almost. I did go to a pre-wedding party today, saw lots of old friends, and that was nice. But for the most part, there is no escaping it for me." -- Forrest Brown, Charlotte, NC "I have been trying to keep busy and listening to patriotic songs is helpful for me. Initially, seeing how the majority of the world was having vigils, prayers, lighting candles for us, waving our flag, was an overwhelming display of compassion... that meant more than words can describe." -- Angie Miller, Tiffin, Ohio "Going out to eat. Starting my music lessons again. Trying to perform all my usual activities. Celebrating my one-year wedding anniversary." -- Terrance C. Tor, Windsor, CT "Got the wake up call and have gone back to church. Spending more time with my family." Jessica, O'Fallon, MO |
