Restaurant takeout scores big on Super Bowl Sunday

(CNN) -- Before settling down in the La-Z-Boy, most football fans -- and those who love them -- pick up the phone before they pick up the remote, according to a new survey.

On the Super Bowl menu in more than a quarter of U.S. households on January 28 will be takeout food, the National Restaurant Association found. Among those aged 18 to 24, the ratio is even higher -- more than half. Chief among items served will be pizza, buffalo wings and submarine sandwiches.

"Super Bowl Sunday is a day when restaurants really score a touchdown as they meet the convenience needs of Americans," said Steven Anderson, the restaurant group's president and CEO. "Handing off the responsibility of the game-day meal to restaurants instead of cooking allows you to relax, watch the game and spend the time with friends and family."

The survey, "Holiday Dining 2000," also found that larger families living in cities in the northeastern United States were the most likely to order takeout or delivery. On a typical day, 21 percent of all U.S. households order takeout or delivery, the survey found.
