LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) -- The first patient in the world to receive a self-contained artificial heart has suffered a "severe setback," hospital officials announced Friday, saying they don't expect him to recover.

Robert Tools, a patient at Jewish Hospital, has developed bleeding in his abdominal area.

"It is not anticipated that Mr. Tools will recover from this setback," a statement from the hospital said.

The bleeding began Thursday and Tools "went into multi-organ failure late Thursday."

Tools suffered a stroke November 11, but the statement said the bleeding is unrelated to that event.

Tools received the artificial heart July 2 and had been doing well before the stroke, gaining about 10 pounds in the past few weeks. He had taken 20 excursions away from the hospital during his recovery, including having lunch with the mayor of Louisville last week.
