Abortion groups get suspicious envelopes

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Ninety offices of Planned Parenthood and at least 80 clinics of the National Abortion Federation have received envelopes containing unidentified powdery substances and letters with threatening language, spokesmen for the groups said Monday.

The groups support abortion rights and provide abortions in at least some of their offices. The threats were received at locations nationwide.

The letters sent to both groups have pre-printed return addresses from the U.S. Marshals Service or the Secret Service.

The letters were mailed from several cities, including Columbus, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; Cleveland, Ohio; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Both groups handed over the envelopes to the local police or to the FBI for testing. Officials said it usually takes about 24 hours to complete a test.

A Planned Parenthood official said an initial test on a sample taken from Greensboro, North Carolina, came back negative.
