NEW YORK (CNN) -- Thousands of off-duty New York police officers and their families rallied outside City Hall, urging Mayor Rudy Giuliani to give them the raises they believe they deserve.

The police union believes officers deserve credit for a marked reduction in crime. Yet, union officials argue, the police are paid far less than their suburban New York counterparts.

In 1992, police led a similar march on City Hall. Only then, David Dinkins was mayor. And then-mayoral hopeful Giuliani joined the officers in demanding better wages.

In contrast to that rally, which turned unruly, Thursday's event was a peaceful gathering.

Among those supporting the demonstrators, two actors who have played New York police officers on TV. "Grandpa" Al Lewis, who was a patrol officer on "Car 54 Where Are You." And Jerry Orbach of "Law and Order"."

The 90-year-old Lewis is contemplating a run for mayor of New York.
