NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former Teamster President Ron Carey was indicted on federal charges of perjury and making false statements. The seven-count indictment was announced by the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan.

Carey, who took charge of the union as a reform candidate pledging to clean up its long history of corruption, was ousted following a fundraising scandal in his 1996 re-election.

James P. Hoffa, son of a former Teamster president tainted by underworld ties and later murdered, was elected to lead the union in 1998.

"Mr. Carey is not guilty of these charges, and we will vigorously defend him," said Mark Hulkower, one of Carey's Washington attorneys.

Hulkower said Carey is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Manhattan at 10 a.m. next Thursday.
