(CNN) -- The controversy surrounding the adoption of children over the Internet made its way into court in January when two couples, one American and one British, thought they had arranged to adopt same twin girls through a San Diego-based adoption Web site, each spending thousands of dollars.

A bitter custody battle ensued between the two couples and the birth mother, who says she wants the twins back. The girls remain in the custody of social services until the dispute is settled.

Tina Johnson, the adoption facilitator and owner of the Caring Heart Adoptions Internet site, faces a criminal investigation for fraud.

In an interview with CNN's Charles Feldman, Johnson's attorney, Carl "Tony" Capazolla, speaks out for the first time about his client, about the media frenzy surrounding the case, and about why he contends she has broken no laws.
