WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Accused White House shooter Robert W. Pickett pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday and has been declared competent to stand trial by a U.S. district judge.

Judge Henry Kennedy overturned a ruling from a U.S. magistrate who wanted Pickett transported to a federal facility in North Carolina for additional competency exams.

Kennedy said he found "no evidence of incompetency, despite the fact it is likely Mr. Pickett is a seriously mentally ill person."

Pickett is charged in a three-count indictment of brandishing a firearm at authorities February 7 as they responded to reports of a man with a gun outside the south lawn fence of the White House.

Police said they were forced to shoot Pickett when he refused to drop his weapon. He was hospitalized for gunshot wounds to a knee and appeared in court Friday on crutches.
