NAACP to join Cincinnati racial profiling suit
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The NAACP said Tuesday it will join a lawsuit filed by other civil rights groups alleging a 30-year pattern of racial profiling by the Cincinnati Police Department. "After walking the streets of Cincinnati and meeting with local civil rights officials ... it is clear that the local police department has targeted African-American citizens because of their race," said Kweisi Mfume, president and CEO of the NAACP. The American Civil Liberties Union and an organization called the Cincinnati Black United Front filed the racial profiling case last month in federal court. The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the police department to alter its practice of targeting minority citizens based on their race and seeks money damages for certain plaintiffs. Mfume says he plans to further discuss with U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft the need for a widespread investigation into the practices and procedures used by Cincinnati police. The Justice Department has already sent a team from the Civil Rights Division to Cincinnati to determine whether an investigation is warranted. RELATED STORIES: Cincinnati lifts curfew RELATED SITES:
