Ex-principal found in Las Vegas with missing girl

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- The former principal of an Indiana Baptist school who was wanted by federal agents for allegedly kidnapping one of his female sixth-grade students was captured by FBI agents in this resort city Tuesday.

William "Andy" Beith, 28, was in federal custody, FBI sources said, and the 11-year-old girl was recovered safely. The pair disappeared one week ago.

Beith was the principal of Liberty Baptist Academy in Lake Station, Indiana. A woman who answered the phone at the academy said he no longer worked there, but she refused to say more.

Beith was wanted on federal charges of coercing and enticing a minor and of transporting a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity. Both charges carry penalties of up to 15 years in prison.

Officials said Beith had had "contact with the girl outside the school setting," but declined to provide details contained in a still-secret criminal complaint.

According to the Associated Press, the sixth-grader from Gary was reported missing May 1 after an argument with her parents at a discount store. An employee told police she was crying and seen running in the store parking lot. Her parents believe she may have telephoned Beith.

CNN's Terry Frieden in Washington contributed to this report.
