Olson's trial may be postponed due to ruling

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- The trial of former 1970s radical Sara Jane Olson may be delayed due to an appellate court ruling issued Tuesday.

California's Second District Court of Appeals ordered a lower court judge to either grant a postponement requested by Olson's attorneys or come before the appeals court to explain why he denied the request.

Attorneys for Olson had asked Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler to delay the trial until September, but he refused.

Olson, who was known as Kathleen Soliah when she was a member of the militant Symbionese Liberation Army in the 1970s, is accused of attempted murder and conspiracy for allegedly planting two bombs underneath a Los Angeles police car in 1974. Neither bomb exploded.

She eluded capture for 25 years before being arrested in 1999 in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she was married, raising three kids and living in relative obscurity.

The SLA is best known for kidnapping newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst, who is scheduled to testify at Olson's trial.
