McVeigh execution delay: What they're saying
Kathleen Treanor, mother of bomb victim: "I can see McVeigh sitting there in his cage, and he's laughing himself to death… This is the kind of thing he revels in. This should never have happened. I see this as giving him a little more power to determine when it is he's going to die, and I just hate that." Todd McCarthy, death penalty opponent and son of bombing victim: "I hope the time that we now have through June 11 -- and I pray that it doesn't happen then -- is enough time to give people pause to really consider the whole death penalty in its entirety … I believe Mr. McVeigh did it .. I have openly forgiven him. I pray for him and his family, but the death penalty is wrong." Kristi McCarthy, daughter of bombing victim: "Having this man die is not going to bring back my father ... my mother is a widow and you can't, you can't replace that. You can't fill that kind of void in your life and extending this more is, it just adds to the pain, it adds to fury as far as I am concerned."
Marsha Kight, mother of bombing victim: "It's too sensitive of a case to make any kind of a mistake and I don't want a cloud hanging over this execution in any way and all these documents should be disclosed to the general public because we don't want McVeigh to be seen as a martyr." Roy Sells, husband of bombing victim: "I'm really disappointed that we can't go on with this execution as scheduled … You prepare yourself mentally and physically for this. It's a big letdown." Jim Denny, father of survivors: "I think (McVeigh) would love to have (the execution) go forward in all this confusion. I'm glad (for the delay) to give the public, the judge, the defense, and the prosecution a chance to look at these documents. ... Those of us who are here in Oklahoma City can and will wait until the appropriate time and we'll be ready for whatever is next in this criminal adventure. ... It's amazing that the same system he (McVeigh) says is cruel to people and doesn't work is the system that probably is going to let him live a little while longer." Peggy Broxterman, mother of bombing victim: "He admitted his guilt. That's it, get it over with. I really don't care what they do. He's going to die, so why prolong it?" RELATED STORIES:
