Terre Haute prisoners will see Sunday's NBA game

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana (CNN) -- Inmates at the federal penitentiary where Timothy McVeigh is scheduled to be executed on Monday will be able to watch Sunday night's NBA finals basketball game after all.

Prison officials had planned to put the institution on lockdown starting Sunday night in preparation for Monday's execution.

But penitentiary spokesman Jim Cross told CNN on Friday that inmates will be allowed out of their cells to watch Game 3 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Many inmates had complained about missing the game due to the lockdown.

The lockdown will begin at the conclusion of the game and will continue through Monday, the day of the first federal execution since 1963, Cross said.

Inmates are often allowed to watch major sports events like the Super Bowl or World Series if the prison population has been behaving normally, Cross said.

Bureau of Prisons spokesman Dan Dunne said plans for Monday's execution are "proceeding normally."

"There are no operational issues right now," said Dunne.

Dunne provided no information on when McVeigh would be moved from the "Special Confinement Unit" on death row to the execution facility. Bureau of Prisons protocol says the move must be made between 72 and 24 hours prior to the execution.

Dunne said reporters would be alerted after the move was made and the execution facility was secured.
