WASHINGTON (CNN) -- According to a White House official and other government sources, the president is still "open to suggestions" when it comes to naming a new FBI director. Thomas Pickard, formerly deputy director of the FBI, took over as acting director after Louis Freeh's last day in the bureau's top spot Friday.

According to the sources, Robert Mueller, the U.S. attorney from the Northern District of California, is still the only candidate. The White House official said there are no problems concerning Mueller and that "he is a very strong and competent candidate. It's just that the president has cast the net a bit wider to be sure the strongest candidate is named."

The official and other sources say there is no timetable for an announcement.
