Eminem gets one year of probation for gun charges

PONTIAC, MI (CNN) -- Rap star Eminem was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation on weapons charges stemming from an incident last June.

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, was charged with possessing a concealed weapon and brandishing it after a confrontation last summer in Royal Oak, MI, with the manager of a rival band, the Insane Clown Posse.

Eminem pleaded "no contest" to the charges in April.

The weapons charge, a felony, has a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The brandishing charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of 90 days.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Denise Langford Morris said Thursday that in sentencing the rapper to a year of probation, she was taking into account his lack of a record, potential for rehabilitation and the opportunity to deter others from committing similar crimes.

"This court believes that you should utilize your talent and creativity by taking this as an opportunity to set an example for young people," Morris said. "That you should share that there are choices in life, that with choices come consequences, that you're suffering those consequences as a result of your actions and your extremely poor judgment."

The judge ordered that Eminem pay about $2,500 in fines and court fees, and perform "some type" of community service chosen by the rap star and approved by the court.

Before dismissing the court, Morris told Eminem, "Now is the time for you to please stand up."

Eminem is already serving two years probation for an earlier concealed weapons charge.
