Preliminary hearing set for comedian Poundstone
SANTA MONICA, California (CNN) -- The attorney for comedian Paula Poundstone expressed optimism Monday that his client would be cleared of child endangerment and lewd conduct charges as a judge set a date of September 11 for a preliminary hearing on the case. "Everything that I've seen about this case has convinced me, as I have been from the start, that Paula is not a child molester," said attorney Steven Cron. "She is not guilty of these charges, and I'm very confident that we will prevail in the end." Poundstone declined to talk to reporters, but her attorney said she remains in rehabilitation for treatment of alcohol-related problems. "She is seeing the children regularly," he said. "She's making progress in rehab, and we're looking forward to the day when she can be reunited on a full-time basis with her children."
Poundstone, 41, was arrested June 27. She has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges of lewd conduct with an unidentified girl under the age of 14 and another charge of child endangerment involving four other children, two girls and two boys. Poundstone, a foster parent since 1993, has adopted three children and was caring for two others before they were taken into protective custody. Prior to the September 11 preliminary hearing, attorneys will meet for a discovery hearing September 5, a date set by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins. -- CNN Correspondent Sherri Sylvester contributed to this report. |
