LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Mickey Thompson was known in the racing world as "Mr. Speed" for setting hundreds of speed records, unofficially breaking the 400 mph speed barrier and racing more than a million miles in more than 10,000 races.

Thompson and his wife Trudy were murdered in 1988 in the driveway of their Southern California home. Authorities say two men shot the couple repeatedly and then fled on 10-speed bicycles.

The case has been unsolved for 13 years, despite a $1 million reward offered by Thompson's sister, Colleen Thompson Campbell, who is the founder of a victims' rights organization.

New forensic techniques, however, as well as at least two new witnesses and tips from the television show "America's Most Wanted" are giving Los Angeles County detectives new hope of solving the case.

Police said the new evidence pointed to Thompson's former business partner, who they suspected of hiring the gunmen since the murders.

Goodman was arrested August 12 and released the next day.
