Grant's road rage outburst

Hugh Grant
Grant: latest role is love rat

LONDON, England -- Movie star Hugh Grant has revealed how he once ripped the windscreen wipers from another driver's car in a fit of "road rage."

The normally mild-mannered star of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill" said he lost his temper after a fellow motorist appeared to bump into his car.

In an interview with celebrity magazine Heat, the former boyfriend of Liz Hurley said he soon came to his senses after the attack, apologised to the other driver and paid for the damage to his car.

Grant, whose new movie "Bridget Jones's Diary," had its European premiere this week, said the incident proves that he is not quite as nice as the characters he usually plays in his films.

He explained: "A couple of years ago I had a bad attack of road rage. It just looked like this guy had bumped into my car. I don't think he had but I lost my temper horribly and ended up ripping the windscreen wipers off his car.

"As soon as I'd done it I apologised profusely and ended up driving him to the garage to buy him new wipers."

His new movie role sees him playing Daniel Cleaver, a seductive love rat, which Grant said his friends think is quite a realistic role.

He said: "There was a moment when I read this script after Richard Curtis had written it and I said `fantastic, but I think you may have gone a little far with Daniel because I've never actually met anyone like that'.

"And they all just laughed and said look in the mirror."
