'Jazz' compilation remembers it well(CNN) -- The sweet sounds of a century in passing are available today in that popular turn-of-the-millennium medium known as the compilation. "Ken Burns' Jazz: The Story of America's Music" (Columbia/Legacy/Verve) accompanies "Jazz," the documentary and book, with a five-CD set ranging from Armstrong to Marsalis. It's 94 tracks detailing the emergence and development of the genre into the American Zeitgeist. The collection also includes a booklet by series writer Geoffrey C. Ward that gives a seven-page history of jazz, as well as historical notes on each song. For instance, Ward summarizes the importance of Armstrong's 1928 rendition of "West End Blues": "This is the music," writes Ward, "that taught musicians how to speak the jazz language, and showed the listeners how to understand what was, at the time, an audaciously new art form." And this is the compilation that brings it to new audiences. RELATED STORIES: Ken Burns unveils legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright RELATED SITES: PBS: 'Jazz' |
