Robbie's bed auctioned for $22,300

LONDON, England -- Singer Robbie Williams has raised more than £165,000 ($238,400) for charity after auctioning some of his prize pop memorabilia.

The best selling item at London's auction house Sotheby's on Wednesday was the framed lyric sheet to the star's number-one hit single "Angels," raking in £31,550 ($45,600).

The king-sized bed the singer used on stage during his 1999 tour sold for £15,450 ($22,300).

The proceeds will go to the charity "Give It Sum," set up by Williams with money he received from a Pepsi sponsorship deal last year.

The pop star will use the funds to support projects in his hometown of Stoke-on-Trent in the English Midlands, as well a children's hospital and the children's charity UNICEF.

Williams himself arrived in time to see the auction of the "Angels" lyric, the last lot in a total of 44.

He told about 400 people at the packed saleroom that he was speechless to have raised so much money.

Vanessa Gibson, 31, a photographer from Kent, southern England, bought the "Angels" lyric for her daughter Ellie.

Accompanied by her husband Stephen, 31, who works in the City, they held their nerve to outbid a rival.

She said: "Our daughter was born at the same time of year as he released the record so it means an awful lot to us.

"We spent a lot of sleepless nights listening to it playing and she now knows all the lyrics to it and loves singing it."

The auction of various pieces of Williams's music memorabilia lasted for about an hour-and-a-half.

His fans waited inside expectantly for the singer and half way through proceedings his friend and fellow singer Geri Halliwell arrived.

Williams thanked all the bidders and buyers for raising so much money.

He said: "I'm speechless. I can't believe what's been going on. It's amazing. I'm so touched and the money is going to go to really good places."

At the end of the auction photographers asked Williams to pose with a pair of his black underpants emblazoned with a tiger's head which sold for .£2,200 ($3,200) to the Daily Star tabloid.

Willams was this year voted Best Male Solo Artist at the Brits, Britain's biggest annual pop music awards.

He has now won a record 12 Brit Awards, way ahead of his nearest rival Annie Lennox who has captured seven.
