Ricky Martin, Van Morrison to play Bush inauguration show

Showbuzz

WASHINGTON -- Latin pop star Ricky Martin's toothy self will be a keynote performer at President-elect George W. Bush's inauguration show January 18. "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer and singer Van Morrison are also scheduled to perform.

The Lincoln Memorial-based inauguration show will feature military bands, skydivers, fireworks, parades other yet-unnamed Hollywood celebrities and singers.

The Creative Coalition, the lobby group for celebrities, will host a bipartisan bash, with William Baldwin, Pat Lawford and Tom Arnold attending. NBC and parent company General Electric are also planning a presidential party.

Former 'Ally' star turns magazine writer

NEW YORK -- Courtney Thorne-Smith, former star of Fox's "Ally McBeal," has a new gig. Instead of being written about, she'll be the one doing the writing.

The 33-year-old actress is joining soccer star Julie Foudy and personal trainer Kathy Kaehler as a contributing editor for the fitness magazine Self. The 1999 issue of Self featuring Thorne-Smith on the cover was the best-selling issue of the year, the magazine said Monday.

In October, Thorne-Smith wrote an essay about her battle with having a distorted body image. She'll write first-person pieces, including a story on a Utah spa, for the April issue.

Cusack makes 'Cosmic' leap

HOLLYWOOD, California -- John Cusack is making a quantum leap with his next movie role. He's signed on to star in and produce "Cosmic Banditos," based on the 1986 novel by A.C. Weisbecker.

The film follows the adventures marijuana smugglers on the lam in the Colombian jungle. One is an American expatriate, played by Cusack, whose character has a "quantum epiphany" about his life and the lives of his fellow smugglers. They are all controlled, he concludes, by the laws of subatomic physics. Huh?

"It's just really original," said Cusack. "It deals with quantum mechanics in a gonzo, gung-ho sort of way."

Tom Cruise, Edie Falco tapped for Golden Globes presentation

Tom Cruise

HOLLYWOOD, California -- Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Edie Falco and James Gandolfini are among the stars who will be presenters at the 58th annual Golden Globe Awards January 21.

All received Golden Globes last year. Kevin Spacey, nominated last year for best actor, will present Al Pacino with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is the Golden Globes' honor for those who have made outstanding contributions to the entertainment world.

The ceremony will air live from Los Angeles on NBC.
